Transporting fasteners safely and environmentally responsibly presents companies with challenges. Arnold Umformtechnik addresses this task with an innovative solution: doing away with polybags. Instead, the components are filled directly into reusable small load carriers (KLTs) or recyclable cardboard packaging. This method aims not only to reduce environmental impact but also to make the packaging process more efficient.
The shift to polybag-free packaging is part of Arnold Umformtechnik's comprehensive sustainability strategy. By eliminating single-use plastics, not only is waste reduced, but the CO2 footprint is also improved. The KLT are either closed with a lid or secured by the box stacked on top. The entire pallet is additionally secured with strapping tape or stretch film to prevent individual parts from falling out or foreign parts from entering during transport. Where special applications require polybag packaging, this will continue to be offered.
Process optimisation through direct packaging
Direct packaging offers numerous advantages. A key aspect is process optimisation: standardisation minimises potential errors and makes the packaging process safer. Previously, polybags were manually placed into the KLT containers in the desired quantities. Now, the sorting system uses a sensor to record the number of components fed into each KLT. Currently, a filled container is still removed from the line by an employee, who then inserts the label with product information. This step could now also be automated more easily, as a robot can grip KLTs more reliably than polybags. Furthermore, eliminating polybags allows for optimised filling volumes. In addition, the saving of plastic is a significant advantage for both parties, both in terms of procurement and disposal.

Phased implementation
Arnold Umformtechnik is approaching the transition step by step. So far, around 15 percent of the packaging has been converted to the new system. Further products are to follow in order to continuously improve the sustainability and efficiency of the packaging process. Customers also benefit from easier further processing due to the simplified removal. Cut injuries when opening polybags are a thing of the past.
