Demeter Bio develops PFAS-free coating

Demeter Bio has unveiled Fibrepel, an innovative, PFAS-free coating that offers an eco-friendly alternative for packaging, textiles and high-performance materials.

The London-based startup Demeter Bio has developed a PFAS-free coating based on biomaterials, which is intended for use in various fields such as textiles, packaging, and other high-performance materials.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as „forever chemicals“, are known for their water- and dirt-repellent properties and are frequently used in food packaging. However, these substances are suspected of being harmful to health and polluting the environment. In Europe, the regulation of PFAS is becoming increasingly strict, which increases the need for alternative solutions. 

Alternative from renewable sources

Demeter Bio has therefore developed a solution with Fibrepel that addresses these challenges. The coating is derived from renewable biological sources and has been designed to provide textiles, packaging and other high-performance materials with durable water, oil and alcohol repellency.

Demeter Bio is a biomaterials company aiming to drive forward the next generation of nature-based materials. For the development of its PFAS-free coating, it recently received an award in the environment category of the Royal Society of Chemistry's Emerging Technologies Competition. This recognition highlights the importance of Fibrepel as a safer and eco-friendly alternative to conventional PFAS-based coatings.
