Digital Product Passport: New Requirements for 2D Barcodes

The EU regulation ESPR introduces new obligations for manufacturers with the Digital Product Passport (DPP). From 2030, products in the EU are to carry a digital identity to ensure longevity, reparability, and traceability. This requires a switch to GS1 2D codes, which allow for additional information and links to digital datasets.

The transition to 2D codes such as GS1 DataMatrix or QR codes is more than just a change of code format for many companies. These codes offer the opportunity to integrate additional content such as batch numbers, expiry dates, or web links. The requirements for print quality and standards-compliant verification increase significantly. It is not enough for a code to be readable; it must fulfil the relevant ISO and GS1 quality criteria.

Six steps to switching

To support manufacturers, machine builders, and system integrators in preparing their machine vision and inspection systems and aligning their processes in a timely manner, Omron's experts have compiled a structured guide with six practical steps:

  • Analyse and review of existing barcode processes: The first step is to record the current status of the barcode processes. This involves the generation, printing, and processing of barcodes, as well as quality assessment.

  • Define required data and use casesCompanies must determine which GS1 data is required per product. Close coordination between Quality, Operations, and IT is crucial to avoid later inconsistencies.

  • 2D print testing – including verification to standardsBefore 2D printing goes into mass production, it should be tested under controlled conditions. Adherence to ISO and GS1 quality standards is central to this.

  • Offline verification and inline inspection combinedA two-stage testing concept, comprising offline verification and inline inspection, ensures stable operation and monitors barcode quality in real time.

  • Train teams and set standardsEmployees must understand the requirements and testing criteria for 2D codes. Training should also cover the interpretation of quality levels and corrective actions.
  • Structuring scaling across lines and machinesAfter validation on a pilot line, the approach should be transferred to further lines or machines. Scaling based on documented standards is crucial.

Challenges and opportunities

The GS1 Sunrise 2027, the Initiative to introduce 2D codes for retail products, is more than just a change of format; it is a central preparatory step for the DPP and the growing ESPR requirements. The switch to 2D codes offers companies the opportunity to fulfil regulatory requirements while simultaneously making internal processes more efficient.

The combination of offline verification and inline inspection creates the technical basis for meeting transparency and traceability requirements. Companies that invest in these technologies early on can not only reliably meet regulatory requirements but also make their internal processes more robust.
