Mondi has developed a packaging concept that combines a corrugated outer box with recyclable, laser-marked flexible packaging. Designed for e-commerce and bag-in-box applications, the concept can be applied to a wide range of flexible packaging formats and demonstrates how innovative packaging design can promote the circular economy and improve supply chain efficiency.
The concept uses laser marking technology to apply printed designs directly onto flexible packaging during processing, rendering traditional printing methods and the associated printing plates obsolete. This enables personalisation, rapid updates to printed designs and greater design flexibility, allowing customers to respond more quickly to market trends and changing consumer preferences.
Concept supports design for recycling
This concept can be adapted to a wide range of flexible packaging formats, from reel-fed materials to pre-made stand-up pouches such as the re/cycle StripPouch or larger pre-made bags like the re/cycle FlexiBag. It supports design for recycling by simplifying material structures and reducing decorative elements. Depending on application requirements, bio-based raw materials or post-consumer recyclate can also be incorporated.
Customers benefit from shorter lead times, increased supply chain agility and greater flexibility when launching new products or designs. By combining Mondi's expertise in corrugated and flexible packaging, the concept enables customers to access complete bag-in-box solutions from a single source.

Mondi is currently working with customers and partners to develop a broader commercial implementation of the concept for pet food, home and personal care products, as well as eCommerce packaging solutions. The concept has just been honored with the 2026 German Packaging Award in the „Sustainability“ category.
