Emmi has commissioned a new PET facility at its Swiss site in Suhr. With this, the dairy processor is expanding the use of PET bottles and will gradually bottle UHT and pasteurised milk in PET in future.

The Suhr site looks back on a history of more than 100 years in milk processing. According to the company, more than 400 employees work there today. Products manufactured include milk, cream, mixed milk beverages, specialty milks and butter. With the so-called West extension, Emmi is creating additional capacity for new technologies and production processes. Part of the investment is the new PET plant.

PET bottles for further dairy products

In 2024, according to its own figures, Emmi became the first dairy processor in Switzerland to introduce white PET bottles as a packaging solution. These were initially used for products including Emmi Energy Milk and Emmi Caffè Latte Mr. Huge.

With the facility in Suhr, the range of applications is now being expanded. In future, UHT and pasteurised milk are also to be gradually bottled in PET containers. The company justifies the switch by, amongst other things, the opportunity to use Switzerland's established PET recycling system.

For functioning material cycles, cooperation along the entire value chain is necessary. Emmi refers here to partners from recycling, PET-Recycling Schweiz and the retail sector.

The new PET facility was inaugurated at the end of August as part of the 20th anniversary of Mittelland Molkerei Suhr under the umbrella of Emmi. The site dates back to the Butterzentrale Suhr, founded in 1917.
