Flexible packaging as an alternative to the cereal box

Cereals are traditionally often sold in a cardboard box with an inner bag. SunDance, on the other hand, relies on a patented flexible design.

SunDance is expanding its flexible packaging solution Pouch³ into the cereal market. The cuboid packaging is designed to combine the shelf impact of a traditional carton with a lower material requirement and the production advantages of flexible packaging.

Cereals are traditionally often offered in a box with an inner bag. With Pouch³, SunDance instead relies on a patented flexible design that retains its cuboid and therefore box-like shape. Six printable surfaces are available for product information and brand design.

Less material and better use of space

According to SunDance, Pouch³ requires approximately 30 to 40 percent less material than conventional stand-up pouches. Depending on the requirements of the respective product, the packaging can be made from recyclable films as well as films containing post-consumer recyclate.

The design should also reduce unused space within the packaging and enable better utilisation of transport boxes, pallets and storage space. Pouch³ is based on a single-layer film structure.

SunDance also offers packaging in digital printing. With this, the company targets, amongst other things, smaller print runs for seasonal products, promotional campaigns, regional offers or market tests.

Flexible packaging with six printable surfaces

With its introduction into the cereals segment, SunDance aims to offer an alternative to the established bag-in-box concept. At the same time, the cuboid design is intended to enable a stronger presence on the shelf compared to classic stand-up pouches.

Pouch³ was honored in 2026 by the US Flexible Packaging Association with the Highest Achievement Award as well as two Gold Awards for Packaging Excellence and Expanding the Use of Flexible Packaging.
