The packaging and medical technology specialist Gerresheimer is restructuring its corporate organisation. From the 2026 financial year, the company will combine its activities into three divisions and aims to focus more strongly on pharmaceutical and biotech applications. The container glass business will be organisationally spun off for this purpose and is intended to be divested at a later date.
Gerresheimer is responding to changing market conditions and is aligning its portfolio more strongly towards pharmaceutical primary packaging and drug delivery systems. The previous segment structure with the areas Plastics & Devices, Primary Packaging Glass, and Advanced Technologies will be replaced by the divisions Containment & Delivery Systems, Primary Injectable Solutions, and Moulded Glass. According to the company, the new structure is intended to depict operational responsibilities more clearly and increase transparency in management.
Focus on Pharma and Biotech
As part of a strategic review, Gerresheimer decided to operate the container glass business as a separate division in the future. While a sale process is planned, it will not be initiated within the 2026 financial year. The company sees the best growth opportunities in the future primarily in the areas of pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.
The new Containment & Delivery Systems division will henceforth combine plastic primary packaging, Centor, Medical Systems, and Advanced Technologies. The Primary Injectable Solutions division will bundle glass tube products and syringe systems for injectable medicines. The Moulded Glass division will encompass glass packaging for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, and beverage applications.
Weak demand in the glass business
In the 2025 financial year, group sales rose to 2.32 billion euros. The main driver was the inclusion of Bormioli Pharma. Operationally, however, performance fell short of expectations. The glass business, in particular, suffered from persistently weak demand from the cosmetics industry and for primary packaging for oral liquid medicines. In contrast, sterile, ready-to-use vials for pharmaceutical applications developed positively.
In response to declining business performance, Gerresheimer also launched a group-wide transformation programme in September 2025. Measures in production, purchasing, sales and cash management are intended to reduce costs, increase performance and sustainably improve free cash flow within the next two years.
