IMA focuses on Cognitive Manufacturing with AI support

IMA has presented its concept of Cognitive Manufacturing, describing it as the next stage of development for networked production systems. The company aims to integrate data, artificial intelligence and human expertise to enable faster and more well-informed decisions in manufacturing. The solution was first presented at interpack 2026.

According to IMA, the approach goes beyond traditional Industry 4.0 concepts. While previously primarily machines and systems were networked, in future production data will be analysed in real time and translated into concrete recommendations for action for operators, maintenance personnel, and production managers. The goals are shorter downtime, higher production efficiency, and better process stability.

AI analyses production data

At the core of the architecture is the generative AI platform Intellecta. It collects and links data from machines, production lines, and sites. According to the company, the system recognises correlations between faults, identifies possible causes and suggests suitable measures based on previous experience. This is intended to make existing expertise available throughout the company.

In addition, IMA is relying on so-called AI-on-Edge solutions directly on the machines. These support operators via the human-machine interface with voice- or text-based assistance. Technical documentation and maintenance information are provided in real-time to accelerate troubleshooting and shorten production downtime.

Robotics as part of the overall system

Under the concept, robots are also no longer intended to work in isolation. Instead, they will be integrated into the entire production environment via Intellecta. This would allow processes to be adapted to the respective production status and processes to be controlled more efficiently and consistently, according to IMA.

The company emphasises that artificial intelligence should not replace human responsibility. Rather, it is about supporting employees with context-specific information, technical documentation, and recommended actions in the event of unexpected occurrences. Final decisions remain with the employees.
