Packaging in the Netherlands

The Netherlands

Different countries, different packaging: a look into supermarkets around the world shows how diverse products are presented, protected, and designed. This time, for our little packaging check, we took a look at the Netherlands.

Nostalgia or sustainability?

Milk cartons without plastic have existed before. For two years now, the Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo has been offering its organic milk again in litre cartons without a plastic cap, saving over 9,000 kilograms of plastic per year, according to the company. However, the milk carton cannot always be opened as cleanly as shown in the picture, unfortunately.

Make yourself comfortable!

Pak je gemak (Make yourself comfortable) is the name of a whole range of fresh food kits for anyone who doesn't know what to cook. In addition to the ingredients, each kit also contains recipes for preparation. Fresh food kits with pre-cut vegetables are particularly easy.

Bag instead of can

The food brand Gwoon is the house brand of Superunie, the purchasing organisation for several major supermarket chains in the Netherlands, including Coop, Spar, Jan Linders, and Plus. Now, the brand's soups and stews are available not only in cans but also in stand-up pouches.

Cold cuts without fuss

Dutch supermarkets such as Jumbo are currently reducing packaging materials in various areas. For example, Jumbo is now doing without the plastic tray in the film packaging for some of their own-brand sliced meats. However, this does not make it easier to remove the product.

The Beer of the Rings

In our country, the craft drinks from the Australian manufacturer are usually available with classic crown caps. In the Netherlands, ginger beer and the like are available in glass bottles with an easy-to-open ring-pull cap. Incidentally, Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Master Brewery is using a high-speed filling system from Krones: with a capacity of up to 51,000 bottles per hour, the line is considered one of the fastest filling lines for glass bottles with ring-pull caps worldwide.
