PackUK has released a new version of its Recyclability Assessment Methodology (RAM). The revised methodology applies to household packaging placed on the market in the UK in 2027 under Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR) and forms the basis for recyclability grading and future fee modulation.
The as RAM 2027 The methodology described follows version 1.1 from the year 2025 and has been revised after extensive consultations with manufacturers, industry associations, and technical experts. According to PackUK, the changes are intended to make the assessment of recyclability more understandable, consistent, and practical.
Clearer assessment criteria
The Update This includes adjustments to the material rules, definitions, and assessment guidelines, as well as a revised structure for the methodology. The aim is to reduce ambiguities and make it easier for companies to apply the specifications. At the same time, the classification of packaging should better reflect actual recycling processes.
The results of the assessment will determine whether packaging is classified as „green“, „yellow“ or „red“. This classification will henceforth influence the amount of fees payable under the pEPR system.
Focus on design for recycling
PackUK expects that the closer alignment with actual recycling processes will create incentives for more easily recyclable packaging and more sustainable packaging design. Manufacturers, the waste management industry and local authorities are all intended to benefit equally from this.
In the coming years, the newly established Producer Responsibility Organisation UK Packaging PRO is also set to play a key role in the further development of the methodology and the provision of supplementary guidance for manufacturers.
Valid from the reporting year 2027
RAM 2027 applies exclusively to packaging placed on the market in 2027. For the reporting years 2025 and 2026, the previous RAM version 1.1 remains applicable. According to PackUK, companies should familiarise themselves with the new methodology early on in preparation for reporting for the year 2027.
The Recyclability Assessment Methodology is to be updated annually in the future in order to take timely account of technical developments and changes in the packaging market.
