The PPWR sets strict limits for PFAS in food-contact packaging. At the same time, it promotes the transition to recyclable packaging and a stronger circular economy. Against this background, Coveris is presenting its latest innovations in the field of recyclable packaging for the pet food market at Pats UK 2026.
Coveris's new packaging solutions are not only recyclable, but also PFAS-free. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are under intense scrutiny due to their environmental and health risks, and reducing them in packaging is an important step towards more sustainable products.
PPWR-compliant packaging
For British pet food manufacturers and brands distributing their products in Europe, these regulatory changes are of great significance. The new requirements are forcing companies to rethink their material selection and production processes in order to comply with legal regulations and meet the rising consumer demand for more sustainable packaging.
„We work closely with international pet food brands to transition to recyclable mono-material and PFAS-free packaging without compromising on the most important aspects: product protection, shelf life, packaging line efficiency and shelf appeal.“
Vincent Larson, Key Account Manager for Pet Food at Coveris (UK)
Coveris already offers PFAS-free pre-made bags for pet food and is expanding its portfolio to include further PFAS-free solutions. The company is integrating PFAS-free design into its packaging development strategy, thereby supporting its customers in meeting changing regulatory requirements while ensuring the performance required for demanding pet food applications.
barrier paper packaging
A key focus is on MonoFlexFibre Max, a paper-based structure designed for recycling in the existing paper stream. It offers a natural paper look and feel, as well as a range of barrier properties, reliable sealing and high-quality printability using rotogravure, flexographic or digital printing processes. The solution can be adapted to various packaging dimensions and weights for food-contact applications.
The presented solutions also include MonoFlexBE with a metallic inner layer – a recyclable mono-material with a high barrier effect that, in addition to improved product protection, offers a high-quality metallic finish to enhance shelf impact and promote brand differentiation.
The Pats UK 2026 takes place from 27 to 29 September at the NEC Birmingham.
