Yogurt drinks and other high-protein dairy products are now more than just food for health-conscious consumers. Alongside the formulation, packaging is also coming increasingly into focus. Although the popular bottle shape still dominates the market, alternative packaging concepts such as spout pouches are on the rise. For this dynamic category, Südpack now offers a PP-based film solution.
CarbonLite PurePP, Südpack's new film solution, is based on a mono-PP composite that has been specially developed for the production of spouted pouches. This packaging format offers a range of benefits that make it equally attractive to manufacturers and consumers. In developing the packaging concept for cold drinking yoghurt, the extrusion expertise and, in particular, the sound experience gained from working with machine and spout manufacturers in the filling of fruit purees were incorporated. This is also evident to a special degree with regard to the machine runnability of the PP composite, even at high cycle rates on standard industry lines.
The high-performance films for the spouted pouch have been designed for the cold filling of drinking yoghurt and other dairy products that require UVC or hydrogen peroxide treatment to reduce germs on the packaging materials. They can be individually equipped with the required barriers against oxygen and water vapour and, according to internal tests, offer the same shelf life as the PET/Alu/PE laminates frequently used to date.
Design for recycling in the PP stream
A key advantage of the new film structure lies in its recycling-friendly design. If the pouch is combined with a PP spout, the entire packaging can be recycled within the PP recycling stream. This helps brand owners to adapt their packaging portfolios early on to the increasing design-for-recycling requirements, such as recyclability and material efficiency.
Alternative to dairy brands
For manufacturers of drinking yoghurt, drinking skyr and similar products, the PP-based spouted pouch opens up new design possibilities. It combines the demands of modern convenience products with the technical requirements of industrial filling processes and the sustainability goals of the packaging industry. Spouted pouches also offer advantages at the point of sale: they enable high-quality, eye-catching product presentation and create differentiation in a competitive chilled aisle.
