The expansion of the Südpack site in Coulmer, France, has been completed. The investment in the plant, which specialises in the production of high-quality primary packaging for pharmaceuticals and sterile barrier systems, underscores Südpack's strategic focus on the growing medical technology packaging market.
The significantly expanded site in Coulmer is primarily used for the production of the MedGuard product line. This includes pouch systems and packaging concepts for implants, surgical sets, wound care products, and surgical textiles. Additionally, special header bags are produced for large-volume medical technology products that are typically subjected to ETO sterilisation. With this product diversity, Südpack is addressing the increasing demand for specialised packaging solutions in the healthcare sector.
Significance for the region
The groundbreaking ceremony on 19 September 2023 marked the start of the company’s largest single project to date. Now, around three years later, the facility, certified to ISO 13485 (Medical devices + Diagnostics) and 15378 (Primary packaging materials – GMP), can leverage its expanded capacities in the production of high-quality primary packaging for pharmaceuticals and sterile barrier systems for medical device and diagnostic applications. This is because, as part of the plant expansion, the cleanroom production area under ISO 7/8 conditions has practically doubled.
The investment is not only a milestone for Südpack, but also a significant boost for the local economy in Coulmer. The expansion will create new jobs and strengthen the region's position as a hub for innovative packaging solutions.
At the same time, the expansion is an essential building block for Südpack's future. Because in Coulmer, work is also being done on future-proof, PPWR-compliant solutions such as recyclable mono-PE concepts for the life science sector, which are intended to replace conventional PA/PE composites.
