Demand for sustainable packaging solutions in the healthcare industry is growing. At CPHI in Milan, Südpack Medica is presenting innovative solutions specially developed for the medical, pharmaceutical and dietary supplement industries. The film manufacturer is focusing in particular on new product developments that combine sustainability, quality and functionality.tionality and thus stand for maximum pack and patient safety.
Südpack Medica places special emphasis on the development of film and packaging solutions that meet the requirements of environmentally conscious companies. One example of this is the PharmaGuard blister concept. The PP-based blister films for packaging solid oral dosage forms are free from phthalates, vinyl, PFAS and halogens, and are characterised by an excellent water vapour barrier, outstanding push-through properties and good processability on standard packaging machinery. According to a Sphera LCA verified to ISO 14040/44, they have a significantly reduced climate impact compared to composite materials made of aluminium and PET – partly because, due to their high PP content, they can be fed into existing recycling streams.
Integrated packaging systems
Furthermore, with its integrated packaging systems for medical, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications in the healthcare sector, the company offers a broad, single-source portfolio: Depending on requirements, the robust rigid and flexible films, standardised as well as customised pouch concepts and lidding systems made of plastics and medical papers can be manufactured under controlled cleanroom conditions and offer maximum product protection, stability and sterility along the entire process chain. They can be equipped with specific barrier properties and opening aids and are designed for highly automated processes.
Südpack Medica works closely with manufacturers of paper and lidding materials as well as packaging machinery to ensure consistent system compatibility. Its in-house laboratory capabilities make it possible to precisely measure mechanical, thermal and functional film properties and validate customer-specific requirements. In addition, the technical centre in Ochsenhausen offers the opportunity to carry out sealing tests with MedGuard films to support packaging development prior to commercial scale-up.
Presentation on the future topic of sustainability
As part of the conference programme in the Packaging & Drug Delivery sector, Jürgen Bodenmüller from Südpack Medica, together with a machine manufacturer and a pharmaceutical company, will highlight the key challenges associated with the introduction of new, recyclable solutions in the pharmaceutical industry, which are calling established industry paradigms into question. The speakers will present practical solution approaches and provide insights into strategies for promoting more climate-friendly pharmaceutical packaging – while simultaneously ensuring efficiency and high barrier performance on an industrial scale.
The presentation „Changing Paradigms in Oral Solid Dose Packaging – Bringing Sustainability, Efficiency and Barrier Performance to Scale” will take place on 8 October 2026 from 12:30 to 12:55 in Hall 11 (11A49).
