It has now received an award for this.\u00a0<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Packaging made from expanded polystyrene (EPS) is increasingly being criticised for being difficult to recycle, based on fossil raw materials and non-biodegradable. An alternative now comes from nature - and is called mycelium. The company Myco from the Czech Republic has developed a packaging material based on mycelium that not only does not require any harmful additives, but can also be completely degraded after use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The bio-based material is created through the controlled growth of mycelium on industrial by-products such as sawdust, hemp shavings or paper waste. It serves as a natural \u201eglue\u201c that binds the fibres together. Chemical binders are not necessary. In incineration plants, it burns residue-free, without toxic emissions. At the same time, production consumes significantly less energy than the manufacture of synthetic plastics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The material can be processed to be soft and flexible or stable and impact-resistant - depending on the desired application. It is heat-resistant up to around 100 \u00b0C and offers good barrier properties against impact, moisture and temperature.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Initial applications - and potential for more<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\">Myco already offers its packaging in several markets, including Germany. Applications to date have mainly been in the area of shipping and protective packaging, for example for electronic devices or furniture components.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">In the future, the company also sees potential in other sectors, such as the construction industry, the automotive sector and fashion.
