The mono films from the PureLine product family are specially designed for flowpacks, stand-up pouches and vacuum bags.

Packaging manufacturer SÜDPACK has presented a sustainable monomaterial solution for packaging whole coffee beans and ground coffee. The aim of the new development is to replace conventional PET/aluminium/PE multilayer composites with recyclable alternatives based on polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE) - without compromising on product protection and machine performance.

The solution is based on high-performance films from the PureLine series, which, according to the manufacturer, fulfil high requirements: Protection against UV radiation, oxygen and moisture, excellent sealing properties, puncture resistance and good folding behaviour. According to SÜDPACK, the mono films can be easily processed on standard packaging machines - there is no need to change machines when switching to the new material.

Sustainability without compromise

Material efficiency and recyclability were at the centre of the development, also with a view to the future requirements of the EU packaging regulation PPWR. According to SÜDPACK, PP-based mono-packaging can save over a third of CO₂ compared to classic composite films made of PET/aluminium/PE. The material itself is around 90 per cent recyclable - depending on the degree of printing and the printing technology used.

The switch to the company's own SPQ (Sustainable Print Quality) printing technology could further improve the environmental balance: Fewer ink changes, lower solvent consumption and a higher proportion of ink waste help to conserve resources and optimise the print result at the same time.

SÜDPACK relies on comprehensive life cycle analyses to evaluate its solutions. These are also available to customers and are intended to provide a fact-based decision-making aid when switching to sustainable packaging.

Developed for demanding applications

The new coffee packaging is suitable for flowpacks as well as stand-up and vacuum bags and, according to the manufacturer, fulfils the complex requirements profile of roasting plants. The integration of mono-valves based on PP or PE can also be realised - using both thermal and ultrasonic sealing.

With the new solution, SÜDPACK is positioning itself as a provider of recyclable packaging concepts for demanding applications in the food sector - and as a driver for a more circular economy in the film industry. The Ochsenhausen-based company has been a member of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for years and is one of the few companies in the industry with EcoVadis platinum status, according to its own statement.

Source: SÜDPACK

SÜDPACK presents a new coffee packaging made of mono-material.
