The Spanish Centre for Plastics Technology, Aimplas, is launching the Safereuse project, which aims to assess the risks of reusable plastic food packaging when used in microwaves and dishwashers. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The newly adopted regulation on packaging and packaging waste sets binding targets for the gradual reuse of packaging. However, there are currently no standardised procedures to assess the food safety risks associated with this reuse<\/strong>. Aimplas, the Spanish Centre for Plastics Technology, is therefore leading the Safereuse project, which aims to assess the risks of reusable plastic food packaging at high temperatures in microwaves and dishwashers.<\/p>\n

The initiative, funded by the Valencian Institute for Competitiveness and Innovation (IVACE+i) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), also aims to develop a methodology that will optimise the Ensures food safety and the protection of consumer health<\/strong> and at the same time provides a system that Compliance with legal regulations<\/strong> supported.<\/p>

With the help of standardised tests<\/strong>, Using a new technology called bioassays, Safereuse will complete the analysis of NIAS (non-intentionally added substances) and MP (microplastics) that can be released from reusable plastics and ensure their safety. \u201e<\/p>\n

\u201eThese short-term bioassays are also playing an increasingly important role in identifying toxicological risks.\u201c<\/p>\n

The project is also intended to help Strengthen confidence in the safety of plastic products<\/strong>, used in microwaves and dishwashers. \u201eThis could help change negative perceptions and promote a more realistic and balanced view of plastics, their health effects and their environmental footprint,\u201c added Moreno. The project also gives companies a competitive advantage in the increasingly demanding area of food safety.<\/p>\n
