The Steel for Packaging Europe association reports the highest recycling rate for steel packaging in the EU to date, with a recycling rate of 82 per cent for 2023. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The value refers to actual recycled material that has been processed in recycling plants - and not just to collected quantities, as is stated.<\/p>\n

The quota was calculated according to the harmonised EU methodology and verified externally. This means that steel packaging already fulfils the requirements of the planned EU packaging regulation (PPWR). According to Steel for Packaging Europe, the rate has risen by two percentage points compared to the previous year.<\/p>

Circularity as a model<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Steve Claus, Secretary General of Steel for Packaging Europe, steel is an ideal material for the circular economy. Recycled packaging can be processed into new steel products without any loss of quality - whether into trains, wind turbines or packaging again. At the same time, the use of steel scrap contributes to reducing emissions and conserving resources.<\/p>\n

With a view to the upcoming EU law on the circular economy, the association is calling for an ambitious political framework and the expansion of high-quality, separate collection systems in all member states. The aim is to secure the competitiveness of European packaging steel in an international context.<\/p>\n
