The innovation saves up to 34 percent CO₂ compared to conventional cartons with an aluminium layer.

In response to the increasing demand for more environmentally friendly packaging solutions, Hochwald is now using SIG's aseptic carton packaging without an aluminium layer for its UHT milk products. The SIG Terra Alu-free material used consists of 82 per cent FSC-certified cartonboard and reduces the carbon footprint of the packaging material by up to 34 per cent compared to SIG's standard material with an aluminium barrier, according to the information provided.

SIG was the first supplier in the industry to develop completely aluminium-free carton packaging for aseptic applications, according to Neuhausen. To date, over 3.6 billion litres of food have already been filled in this packaging. Thanks to the simplified material structure, the aluminium-free cartons not only offer environmental benefits, but also provide reliable protection without refrigeration over longer periods of time.

Communication at the POS: making sustainability visible

Hochwald is focusing on a clear consumer approach for the launch: the advantages of the SIG Terra aluminium-free packaging are communicated prominently on the outside of the milk cartons.
