The new solution is aimed at European thermoformers who want to switch to sustainable materials without having to adapt their processes, according to the Scandinavian company.

Scanfill, a Swedish manufacturer of packaging materials, and the Finnish material innovation company Sulapac are joining forces for a more sustainable packaging industry in Europe. With „Degrafoil Flow 1.7“, they are presenting a new film made entirely from Sulapac's bio-based, industrially compostable wood composite. The film can be processed like conventional plastic material in thermoforming systems and should therefore enable an uncomplicated switch to sustainable alternatives, they say.

Industrially compostable and comparable to PET

According to the manufacturer, the new film combines the functional properties of plastic with the advantages of fibre-based materials. Products made from „Degrafoil Flow 1.7“ have a smooth, fibre-like surface that differs haptically from conventional plastic. At the same time, the material is scratch-resistant and durable - comparable to PET. In terms of colour, there are virtually no limits to the applications.

Sustainability without compromising on workmanship

According to Karl Banke, sustainability specialist at Scanfill, reliable quality in thermoforming processing was the decisive factor in favour of Sulapac. „For a long time, we wanted to include a compostable product in our portfolio, but only Sulapac could fulfil our quality requirements,“ says Banke.

Juho Luukkanen, Sales Director at Sulapac, emphasises the strategic approach: „Sulapac wants to make sustainability an easy choice.
