The production stop is part of a strategic optimisation of the packaging division. The closure is scheduled to take place by 3 September 2025 at the latest and will affect 123 employees.

The company, headquartered in Kingsey Falls (Québec), justifies the decision with the aim of increasing profitability and customer satisfaction in the long term. Niagara Falls previously had an annual capacity of around 200,000 short tons. A second paper machine had already been shut down in 2023. The current closure costs are estimated at around USD 5 million.

Jean-David Tardif, Executive Vice-President Packaging at Cascades, explained: „This is a difficult but necessary decision as part of our strategy to optimise the performance of the packaging sector.“ The company is well positioned to capitalise on future growth opportunities. The aim is to simplify processes and focus on core areas, said Tardif.

Cascades emphasises that it will actively support the affected employees - especially in their professional reorientation.
