Coveris has developed a mono-material packaging solution for tortilla wraps. The new MonoFlex thermoforming film replaces non-recyclable thermoforming substrates made from mixed materials and also offers a long shelf life.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The project was developed in close collaboration with a manufacturer of tortilla wraps who wanted to develop a more sustainable Alternative to the previously used PA\/PE structure<\/strong> for its packaging. The biggest challenge was to find a recyclable material while ensuring a minimum shelf life of six months for tortillas with minimal use of preservatives.<\/p>\n

Following performance tests at the Coveris Food Science Lab in Gainsborough (UK), the team decided in favour of a thermoformable top and bottom film made of mono-material<\/strong>. The material provided the delicate tortilla wraps with reliable protection against mould during the required test period and at the same time enabled them to be recycled via existing waste streams.<\/p>

MonoFlex Thermoform offers several advantages, including barrier properties for longer product protection and shelf life, as well as high puncture resistance. The packaging solution is fully compatible with existing equipment and enables Smooth changeover from alternative substrates without affecting production speed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The packaging is available as a fully printed or unprinted top and bottom film. It supports conventional and HD flexographic printing or gravure printing<\/strong> including matt, gloss and tactile lacquer finishing options, which increases the attractiveness for the consumer and enables an attractive presentation on the shelf.<\/p>\n
