Together with Aldi Süd and Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller, the company has developed new sour cream tubs with 30 per cent recycled content, which have been available in many Aldi Süd shops since the beginning of the year.

In July 2025, the new packaging solution was honoured with the German Packaging Award in the „Sustainability: Recycled Material“ category. It is seen as an important step towards making food packaging in the mass market more sustainable.

Cooperation with retailers and the dairy industry

The cooperation with Aldi Süd and Theo Müller is already the second large-scale market launch of food-grade recycled polystyrene in Germany. Ineos Styrolution is thus positioning itself as a pioneer in the transition to recyclable packaging. According to Rob Buntinx, President EMEA, the company is demonstrating that recycled solutions can fulfil both food safety and performance requirements.

Regulatory background

The move comes against the backdrop of stricter EU requirements under the forthcoming Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
