The new deposit return system has been in force in Poland since 1 October 2025. Packaging with deposit labelling is now being gradually introduced in the retail sector.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The aim is to increase recycling rates and reduce environmental pollution. The system includes single-use plastic bottles up to 3 litres and drinks cans up to 1 litre with a deposit of 0.5 z\u0142oty, as well as returnable glass bottles up to 1.5 litres with a deposit of 1 z\u0142oty. Consumers can get their deposit back at any collection point without having to show a receipt. Larger shops over 200 square metres are obliged to set up collection points, smaller businesses can participate voluntarily. The prerequisite is that the packaging is undamaged and labelled with a deposit symbol.<\/p>\n

According to Environment Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska, the system is intended to benefit both citizens and nature: \u201eThe advantages are obvious - a cleaner environment and more raw materials that are returned to the cycle.\u201c Experience from other countries has shown that over 90 per cent of packaging subject to a deposit is returned to the retail sector.<\/p>

Packaging in the new system can be recognised by the standardised deposit symbol on the label. It indicates that the packaging can be returned and the deposit refunded. Returns are made manually at the checkout or at customer service - alternatively via reverse vending machines. The deposit amount is paid out in cash.<\/p>\n

With the gradual introduction and cooperation with smaller shops, Poland wants to ensure nationwide access to collection points and make the transition as easy as possible for citizens.<\/p>\n
