The Indian Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) has submitted a draft amendment to the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations. The text provides for a ban on PFAS in food contact materials and BPA-free materials made from polycarbonate and epoxy resins.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The draft, dated 6 October 2025, adds two new points to the general requirements of the Packaging Ordinance: Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may no longer be used in the manufacture of food contact materials; in addition, food contact materials made from polycarbonate and epoxy resins must be free from bisphenol A (BPA) and its derivatives.<\/p>\n

Significance for packaging manufacturers<\/h3>\n

For manufacturers of food packaging and materials in India - and for exporters to the market - the planned changes mark a clear regulatory shift away from PFAS applications. At the same time, the BPA requirement establishes a far-reaching restriction for polycarbonate and epoxy-based systems in food contact. Companies should review their material portfolios, barrier solutions and proof of conformity at an early stage and validate alternatives in order to make efficient use of possible transition periods, according to a statement from New Delhi.<\/p>\n
