With increasing production, a high recycling rate, and broad industrial use, the sector highlights its economic and ecological importance.

The Spanish corrugated cardboard industry continued to solidify its role as a pillar of the packaging economy in 2025. According to Afco, the sector comprises 66 companies with 89 production sites, achieving a total production of 5,941 million square metres of corrugated cardboard. This cements Spain's position as one of Europe's leading producers.

Stable key figures and economic significance

The sector achieved a total revenue of 7.168 billion euros in the reporting year and secured 26,875 jobs in Spain. Paper consumption stood at 3.347 million tonnes. These figures highlight the significant importance of corrugated cardboard for industry, logistics, and trade.

The material has a particularly strong presence in the food industry, which accounts for the largest share of its use at around 61 percent. Other important sectors include consumer goods, e-commerce, and capital goods, underscoring the material's versatility.

Circular economy as a key factor

A key driver of the positive development is the established circular economy. Corrugated cardboard is collected after use, recycled, and fed back into the production process. According to Afco, the fibres can be reused more than 25 times without losing any quality.

With a recycling rate of 95 per cent, corrugated cardboard is one of the most frequently recycled packaging materials in Europe. The material is considered renewable, biodegradable and fully recyclable, making it increasingly attractive in the context of regulatory requirements.

Production per capita and European ranking

Per capita production in 2025 was around 61 kilograms of corrugated board, showing a stable level. In a European comparison, Spain continues to be one of the largest markets, even though countries like Germany and Italy achieve higher production volumes.

Source: Afco

Spaniens Wellpappensektor wächst 2025 weiter: Produktion, Recyclingquote und wirtschaftliche Bedeutung bleiben auf hohem Niveau.
[111
36,32,1487,60796,59820
0":"post-114602","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-maerkte","8":"tag-markt","9":"tag-packmittel-und-packstoffe","10":"tag-papier-pappe-karton","11":"tag-spanien","12":"tag-wellpappe","13":"cs-entry","14":"cs-video-wrap
["GET
