Albert Heijn, Aldi, Carrefour, Colruyt, Delhaize and Lidl, along with around 15 other partners along the value chain, are participating in the Repasys pilot project.

According to Fost Plus, the project is considered the first large-scale Belgian practical trial for reusable packaging for fresh produce. The aim is to test, under real market conditions, how a uniform reusable system for fresh products works and what conditions need to be met for a later expansion.

QR codes should make returns and logistics measurable

Each bowl is fitted with a GS1-standard QR code. This allows for the recording of return rates, usage behaviour, and logistical processes, among other things. Between uses, the bowls are industrially cleaned and then returned to circulation.

Fost Plus sees the combination of uniform packaging, clearly regulated deposits, and flexible returns as an important factor in the model. Consumers can return the trays to all participating shops, regardless of where they were purchased.

EU requirements increase pressure on single-use packaging

The pilot is also linked to European packaging regulations. According to Fost Plus, the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) plans to introduce restrictions or bans on certain single-use plastic packaging for fresh fruit and vegetables by 2030. The results from Mechelen are therefore intended to inform the advice given to companies that need to adapt their packaging accordingly.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;text-align:center" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2686439340972671" data-ad-slot="6171251825"></ins>

Source: Fost Plus

In Mechelen testen sechs Handelsketten Mehrwegschalen für Pilze.
