{"id":25612,"date":"2019-08-09T13:25:16","date_gmt":"2019-08-09T11:25:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/?p=25612"},"modified":"2020-08-21T17:00:13","modified_gmt":"2020-08-21T15:00:13","slug":"metsae-board-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/en\/metsae-board-nachhaltigkeit\/","title":{"rendered":"Cartonboard mills on the road to sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mets\u00e4 Board, a Mets\u00e4 Group company and a leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboard, has published its sustainability targets for 2030.<\/p>\n<h2>Avoidance of fossil fuels<\/h2>\n<p>Among other things, the company wants to achieve the following in cartonboard mills by 2030 <strong>no longer use fossil fuels<\/strong> and fossil CO2 emissions completely. This ambitious target relates to emissions from both the company's own energy production (scope 1) and purchased energy (scope 2). Currently, 82 % of the energy used by Mets\u00e4 Board's paperboard mills comes from non-fossil energy sources.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Mets\u00e4 Board intends to <strong>Water consumption<\/strong> per tonne produced by 30 % <strong>reduce<\/strong> and increase energy efficiency by at least 10 % by 2030 compared to 2018. Our recently published plan to modernise Mets\u00e4 Board's pulp mill in Husum is an important step on our way to becoming completely independent of fossil fuels in our production.\u201c<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mika Joukio<\/strong>, CEO of Mets\u00e4 Board.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Certified raw materials<\/h2>\n<p>The main raw material used in Mets\u00e4 Board's paperboard production is <strong>renewable and 100 % traceable wood<\/strong> from sustainably managed northern European forests. Mets\u00e4 Board has set a target of sourcing at least 90 % of total wood raw materials from certified sources by 2030. In 2018, the proportion of certified wood raw materials within the company totalled 79 %.<\/p>\n<p>Mets\u00e4 Board is a Mets\u00e4 Group company that already acts as an important CO2 sink, as its manufacturing processes already bind more CO2 than it emits.
