{"id":28256,"date":"2019-11-06T15:00:44","date_gmt":"2019-11-06T14:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/?p=28256"},"modified":"2019-11-06T14:19:38","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T13:19:38","slug":"federal-cabinet-bans-plastic-bags","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/en\/bundeskabinett-verbot-plastiktueten\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal Cabinet decides to ban plastic bags"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>At the suggestion of Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze, the Federal Cabinet today initiated a ban on plastic bags.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The draft law provides that <strong>Plastic bags with a wall thickness of less than 50 micrometres<\/strong> will be banned in future. Excluded from the ban are certain very lightweight plastic carrier bags (wall thickness of less than 15 micrometres), which are used in retail, particularly for transporting loose fruit and vegetables. A ban on these so-called <strong>\u201eShirt bag\u201c or \u201eknot bag\u201c<\/strong> would lead to the increased use of more expensive packaging.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201ePlastic bags are the epitome of a waste of resources: they are made from crude oil and are often only used for a few minutes. They often end up in the environment, where they remain for many decades. Germany currently consumes around 20 single-use plastic bags per person per year. With a ban, we can now get to zero,\u201c says Federal Minister for the Environment\u00a0<strong>Svenja Schulze<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The legal ban is intended to continue the positive trend in <strong>Consumption of lightweight plastic carrier bags in Germany<\/strong> and consistently continue the agreement concluded in 2016 between the Federal Ministry for the Environment and the retail sector.
