{"id":34253,"date":"2020-05-18T10:32:05","date_gmt":"2020-05-18T08:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/?p=34253"},"modified":"2020-05-17T17:32:23","modified_gmt":"2020-05-17T15:32:23","slug":"innovation-prize-bio-based-material-of-the-year-2020-awarded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/en\/innovationspreis-bio-based-material-of-the-year-2020-vergeben\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201eBio-based Material of the Year 2020\u201c innovation prize awarded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year, the H\u00fcrth-based nova-Institute once again presented its \u201eBio-based Material of the Year\u201c innovation award - this time online due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The prize is awarded every year at the <strong>\u201eInternational Conference on Bio-based Materials\u201c<\/strong> of the research institute for the most innovative materials and products on the market. Six companies from 17 applications were nominated by an expert jury this year. They <strong>brought their ideas home to the conference participants via the screen<\/strong>. After the presentations, the winners were honoured in a <strong>Online survey<\/strong> chosen by the public.<\/p>\n<p>First place went to a certified wood fibre packaging for ready meals from<strong> Huhtamaki Lurgan (UK\/Finland). <\/strong>\u201eFresh\u201c is completely bio-based and biodegradable: the ready-made meal tray based on wood fibre can be <strong>as an alternative to black plastic<\/strong> can be used. The material is easier to recycle and certified for home composting. The packaging is made from natural wood fibres sourced from FSC-certified and renewable Nordic forests. The <strong>Bowl is food-safe, heat-resistant and microwave-safe<\/strong>, The bowls are easy to handle and retain their shape when heated. The bowls are produced in Northern Ireland by Huhtamaki Lurgan using specially developed machines.<\/p><div class=\"packa-in-post-alle\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"packa-3208158009\"><div id=\"packa-4164278682\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/en\/newsletter\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"PJ Self-promotion English 03\"><!--noptimize--><img src=\"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03.png\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03.png 840w, https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03-300x75.png 300w, https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03-768x192.png 768w, https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03-18x5.png 18w, https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03-332x83.png 332w, https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03-664x166.png 664w, https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03-688x172.png 688w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" width=\"840\" height=\"210\"  style=\" max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" \/><!--\/noptimize--><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Second place went to an adhesive tape made from 90 per cent renewable raw materials from<strong> monta adhesive tape factory <\/strong><strong>(Germany). <\/strong>Its carrier is a <strong>bio-based PLA film<\/strong>, which are equipped with a <strong>Natural rubber adhesive<\/strong> is coated. Under industrial composting conditions, this packaging tape biodegrades within a few months. It has been certified by T\u00dcV Austria and awarded the <strong>OK Compost Industrial\u201e mark of conformity\u201c<\/strong> labelled. Monta biopack is an environmentally friendly alternative for sealing cardboard packaging, biodegradable bags and for binding flowers and garden waste.<\/p>\n<p>Third place went to a functional, paper-based and compostable barrier coating from the<strong> Fraunhofer ISC (Germany)<\/strong>.
