The packaging manufacturer wants to use this to help its customers reduce emissions in their supply chains.

Despite increasing overall production, DS Smith says that its new design process removes around 20,000 tonnes of raw material from the cycle. This corresponds to around 238 million packages. Thanks to these savings, emissions of around 32,000 tonnes of CO2 avoided. This is roughly equivalent to avoiding two million delivery journeys in cities worldwide.

Delhaize delivers food in a sustainable box

For the Supermarket chain Delhaize Belgium DS Smith, for example, has developed the so-called Direct Box and at the same time sustainably reduced the delivery volume of e-commerce packaging in inbound transport. This box is used to deliver Delhaize products to the customer's doorstep. A business area that has grown significantly in recent months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The newly designed Direct Box is made from 100 per cent recycled paper, which can also be fully recycled again after use. There is also a machine concept to meet the increasing demand.

As a result of the redesign 160 tonnes of packaging material saved annually. A global saving of around 87.2 tonnes of CO2 per year.

„DS Smith is committed to promoting the circular economy and uses its expertise to develop packaging innovations that accelerate our progress. Our ability to maximise performance through better design has led to a tangible impact on the environment. Whether it's avoiding carbon emissions in our supply chains or offering closed-loop recycling, we continue to develop circular solutions that are fit for the changing world we operate in.“ Alex Manisty, Group Head of Strategy at DS Smith

The design process begins with the application of the circular design principles that DS Smith together with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation has developed. The aim is to ensure the optimisation of packaging right from the start. This creates real added value for customers across all sectors, including e-commerce and the consumer and industrial goods industry. In addition, an optimised manufacturing process ensures efficient use of materials, with which a proportion of the total of around 17 billion packages produced are already produced with optimised performance.

Optimised packaging protects during transport

With up to 50 touchpoints in the traditional e-commerce supply chain before reaching the end customer the performance of the packaging continues to be a decisive aspect. Through the DISCS™ technology from DS Smith - which mimics the special transport stresses of e-commerce transport - the optimised packaging offers equivalent or even better protection.

As part of the recently published Sustainability strategy Now.
