Bio-based plastics based on renewable raw materials are repeatedly cited as a solution. Four research approaches have emerged from this call and are now being funded by the BMEL via its project management organisation Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e. V. The packaging will consist of a thermoformed PLA tray and a PLA sealing film. The tray and sealing film will have a multi-layer structure in order to fulfil the various requirements of the food to be packaged and the packaging process. However, they are not yet available in bio-based plastics. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnr.de\/projektfoerderung\/ausgewaehlte-projekte\/projekte\/technologieentwicklung-fuer-biobasierte-pouch-verpackungen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The three project partners<\/a> want to develop bio-based films and test their suitability for pouch packaging. To this end, the production of bio-based pouch packaging is being investigated on a special test facility.<\/p><p>In particular, the sealing of the seams, which must take place in an efficient and reliable production window, poses a challenge for the material. Four partners from research and industry now want to produce bottles made from polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA).<\/p><p>The PHA compounds should be easy to process and have good material stability and a high water vapour barrier. They must also be CO<sub>2<\/sub>- and oxygen-permeable. In order to be able to use the bottles made from this material for microbially susceptible liquids, they must be able to be sterilised with gamma rays. This means that they wrap around the product like a second skin, either as primary protection, e.g. for frozen pizza, or as transport protection, e.g. for a pack of drinks bottles. The first bio-based shrink films have been on the market for some time, but are not suitable for deep-freeze applications.<\/p><p>Set here <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnr.de\/index.php?id=11150&amp;fkz=2220NR025A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the two network partners<\/a> on.
