Mars Petcare is preparing to use food-grade, recycled plastic in packaging for wet pet food, in a global commitment to increase the recycled content of its plastic packaging. Cat food brand Sheba will be the first to offer the updated packaging formats in Europe in 2022. This is part of Mars Petcare's efforts to offer pet owners a more sustainable choice.<\/strong><\/p>

This step is part of a joint partnership between Mars Petcare<\/a> with Sabic<\/a> and Huhtamaki<\/a> for the development and use of recycled plastic in pet food bags<\/strong> using advanced recycling technologies (also known as \"chemical recycling\"). Only with advanced recycling materials that fulfil their Food-safe<\/strong> this development was possible. It is an excellent example of how this technology is making a significant contribution to closing the gap in the circular economy for plastics.<\/p>

Barry Parkin, Chief Procurement and Sustainability Officer at Mars, Incorporated, said: \"The fact that we are now able to add recycled content to our Sheba pouches helps us achieve our goal, an average recycling rate of 30 per cent<\/strong> in our plastic packaging and to minimise the use of Reduce virgin plastic by 25 per cent<\/strong>reach them faster.\"<\/p>

Pet food packaging is considered a challenging packaging format when it comes to using recycled content, as thermal processing required<\/strong> to achieve the highest quality. By using ISCC-Plus certified recycled material, Mars Petcare is utilising technology that represents a step towards sustainability in the pet food industry. Mars Petcare, together with its partners Sabic and Huhtamaki, has been working towards this circular economy goal for plastic packaging by utilising advanced recycling technologies.<\/p>

With its Trucircle plastics portfolio and its services, Sabic is a pioneer in the plastics industry. Recycling household packaging waste<\/strong>which was previously considered difficult to recycle. With Huhtamaki's technical expertise in formulating and manufacturing easily tearable, sterilisable polypropylene films such as Terolen, Sabic's polymers can be used in wet pet food packaging such as the new Sheba pouch.<\/p>
