The Viennese packaging company Coveris, together with the Irish food group Ornua Foods, has launched a range of lightweight, fully recyclable pouches for the grated cheese of the British supermarket chain Tesco.<\/strong><\/p>

The launch marks a step change in cheese packaging, moving from a blended, three-ply nylon laminate - one of the most difficult materials to recycle - to a fully recyclable polyethylene (PE) monolaminate structure<\/strong> with integrated barrier properties.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The new MonoFlexBE format is a direct replacement for the current non-recyclable packaging materials<\/strong> and fulfils current shelf life requirements without compromising the efficiency of packaging lines. The film also offers a significant weight reduction of 680 milligrams of plastic per bag, enabling further carbon savings.<\/p>

The film is currently available in selected packs of grated cheese in Tesco shops across the UK and will be rolled out across the retailer's own-brand grated cheese category later this year. By phasing out the current hard-to-recycle plastic and switching to the new monolaminate material, it is expected to save approximately 411 tonnes of plastic to a special recycling stream<\/strong> supplied<\/strong> will be reduced. Thanks to their lightweight properties, the packaging will also save around 32 tonnes of plastic, which will be completely removed from the supply chain.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The functionality of the previous, non-recyclable packaging is reflected in the new, highly transparent format. It has a resealable zip and is printed with up to nine colours using HD flexographic printing<\/strong> and finished with a matt lacquer that provides a pleasant feel and improved stability.<\/p>
