A recent study by ETH Zurich has now taken a look at the beginning of the life cycle of plastic and has come to new conclusions: More CO2 emissions are produced during the production of plastic than during its incineration.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a52b8f9 exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a52b8f9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In addition to the visible pollution caused by plastic, there is also a great deal of pollution that is not visible at first glance: in 2015, the plastics industry was responsible for 1.6 billion tonnes of global CO2 emissions, with the <strong>According to the researchers, the majority of these emissions (around 96 per cent) are generated during the production of plastics<\/strong>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41893-021-00807-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Researchers at ETH Zurich<\/a> conclude that twice as much fossil energy is burned in the production process as is contained in the plastic as a raw material.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71dc8b1 exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"71dc8b1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Outsourcing of production <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-041640d exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"041640d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>So far, research has mainly focussed on the environmental damage caused by the disposal of plastic. According to the study, the decisive factors for the amount of energy used in production are primarily the <strong>steadily increasing use of coal-fired electricity in production<\/strong>. This applies primarily to the <strong>Booming plastics industry in emerging markets such as China, India and Indonesia<\/strong>, where the energy required for new plastic mainly comes from climate-damaging coal-fired power plants. According to the study, many EU countries and western industrialised nations have outsourced the energy-intensive production of plastics to these countries.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-84cb6f0 exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"84cb6f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Climate protection through the circular economy <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9168343 exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9168343\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The increased use of renewable energies would help to reduce the CO2 footprint in the production of plastic. However, it would be more effective to <strong>Replacing the production of new plastic with closed-loop management<\/strong>. The mid-sized company has sold all of its transparent PET bottles of the brand <a href=\"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/?s=frosch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frog<\/a> to 100 per cent used plastic.
