Imagine that in future, drones will deliver your online orders in reusable shipping boxes made from recycled composite packaging. Five students from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) had exactly this idea and have developed a corresponding recyclable concept. Last year, they won first prize in the VDI's chemPlant competition.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The students of the KIT<\/a>-The Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Process Engineering have developed a special recycling concept: This involves Recovering plastics from composite packaging that were previously almost impossible to recycle<\/strong> and processed into reusable shipping boxes. \u201eCompared to other recycling processes, in which only the unmixed plastics are processed into recyclate, we want to recycle composite packaging and reuse all of the recyclable materials it contains. In this way, we also returns the unpopular plastic waste from household waste back into the cycle<\/strong>\u201c, says Tom Poppe, Master's student at KIT. \u201eWe are also combining the recycling of plastic waste with the growing, huge demand for packaging in the mail order business.\u201c<\/p>

The model devised by Jonas Jaske, Tom Poppe, Philipp Beeskow, Lukas Richter and Paul Neugebauer provides for the Remove plastic adhesive between the millimetre- to nanometre-thin layers of the multilayer packaging with solvent<\/strong> and thus separate the individual types of plastic. Shipping boxes are then to be produced from the recovered raw materials.<\/p>

Recycled Polymer Packaging Karlsruhe<\/strong>, RepoPaK for short, is what the students call their recycling process and the sustainable, injection-moulded shipping box. These will be available in different sizes, made from a recycled plastic suitable for the respective volume.<\/p>

\u201eFor smaller crates, which are likely to be in higher demand, you could use recyclates that are available in larger quantities. Sizes that are less in demand could then be made from other types. In this way, all types of recyclate can ultimately be reused.\u201c<\/p>

When it comes to possible applications, the young engineers also take a look into the future. There the RepoPaK boxes are transported by drones<\/strong>. A return system is part of the concept: the recipient stores the collapsible boxes until they are picked up again by a drone.<\/p>

\u201eWe also considered a deposit system, but setting up such a system in this area is very complex. RepoPaK can therefore also be used as classic shipping packaging.\u201c<\/p>

Thanks to its honeycomb structure, it is stable, lightweight and also waterproof. \u201eRepoPaK is The integrated QR code and an RFID chip make it ideal for the fully automated shipping of the future.<\/strong> And thanks to its purity, the box can be easily recycled at the end of its service life.\u201c<\/p>

The concept convinced the jury of the nationwide chemPLANT<\/a>-The competition for creative young process engineers (kjVI) in the Process and Chemical Engineering Society of the Association of German Engineers (VDI). RepoPaK was awarded first prize in 2021.<\/strong> The first enquiries from industry have already been received, but the five of them want to complete their studies next year first.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
