At its annual economic press conference on 2 March, the German Plastics Processing Industry Association (Gesamtverband Kunststoffverarbeitende Industrie e. V. - GKV) presented its assessment of the plastics processing industry in Germany for 2021. Although industry turnover rose by a good 12 per cent to 69.4 billion euros, the companies' results were under heavy pressure.<\/strong><\/p>

Turnover in the German plastics processing industry rose by 12.6 per cent to EUR 69.4 billion last year. Nevertheless, the companies are facing strong pressure on earnings<\/strong>. The reasons for this are the Cost increases for raw materials and energy<\/strong> and the Delays in delivery and resulting order cancellations<\/strong>. A total of 15 million tonnes (an increase of 5.6%) of plastics were processed in Germany in 2021, of which 2.2 million tonnes were recycled plastics. The number of employees is stable at just under 322,000.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The economic outlook for 2022 remains very mixed and associated with high uncertainties regarding costs and delays. Even though half of the companies expect sales growth, a good quarter anticipate a further decline in earnings, according to the GKV survey of members. As a result, many companies are considering relocating or discontinuing production or even closing down completely<\/strong>.<\/p>

\u201ePoliticians urgently need to reduce the government surcharges on energy prices. Bringing forward the EEG reform can only be a first step. A reduction in the electricity tax and a debureaucratisation of the regulation for the national CO2 price must follow.\u201c GKV President Roland Roth<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>

Despite the uncertain economic situation, the industry remains committed to the goals of the circular economy and climate protection. However, the high costs are slowing down the willingness to invest. According to the survey, necessary investments in energy efficiency, climate protection, modernisation of production and digitalisation are currently on hold<\/strong>.<\/p>
