The International Aluminium Institute (IAI) has commissioned a study on the recycling of beverage packaging materials. The results underline the important role of aluminium cans in the circular economy: compared to glass and plastic, almost twice as many cans are recycled into new products.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The data shows that today, more than 70 percent of the material used in aluminium cans is recycled into new products - almost twice as much as glass (34 percent) and plastic (40 percent). The study also shows that compared to aluminium cans more glass and plastic bottles end up in landfill sites<\/strong>because they are not collected. In addition, the losses in the recycling system after collection are three times higher for PET and glass bottles than for aluminium cans.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Germany already has a recycling rate of 99 per cent, making it the world champion in this discipline. Thanks to a well-functioning deposit system, Germany is a prime example of closed-loop recycling. The German aluminium industry invests in the most modern recycling technologies and operates the world's most advanced recycling plants. And it will also intensify its efforts beyond the can.\"<\/p>

On behalf of the IAI<\/a> Eunomia Research and Consulting analysed data in five regions: Brazil, China, Europe, Japan and the USA. The study analysed the Processing losses at the end of the life cycle of aluminium cans, glass bottles and plastic bottles<\/strong>. The study also looks at collection, sorting, reprocessing and thermal processing, recycling in closed loops and recycling in open loops.<\/p>
