In the Netherlands, consumers can now buy Zespri kiwis in new packaging. The company teamed up with The Greenery and Skillpack to realise recyclable, reusable and compostable packaging that meets customers' desire for sustainable solutions.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In response to signals from the market and at Zespri's request, The Greenery began developing new packaging and purchasing a suitable machine. \"Zespri has set itself the goal for 2025 that all Packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable<\/strong> should be. We already started with plastic-free packaging in Belgium last year. We are delighted that we now also have these premium packs on the shelves in the Netherlands,\" explains Eline Voigt, Account Manager Retail Benelux at Zespri.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\"We also believe it is important to start preparing for the new packaging law, according to which hybrid packaging is no longer permitted.<\/strong> is allowed to use. The new packaging for the kiwis is made of cardboard: by using mono-material, the packaging is easier to recycle. With the introduction of this new packaging, we will soon Saving 11,000 kilograms of plastic per year<\/strong>.\"\u00a0<\/p>

The Greenery has set itself the goal of achieving 2026 all packaging recyclable or reusable<\/strong> to make. A new machine is also being used to achieve this. Skillpack already supplies Duikestein with tomato packaging, but the machine could not be used on a one-to-one basis as the shape of the goods to be packaged is different.\u00a0<\/p>

\"In addition, only 1 pack is used for tomatoes, whereas we need 5 different packs for kiwis. We have further developed the packaging line together with Skillpack. The machine presses the lid onto the kiwis and fixes them to the tray with a drop of glue. This way you can pack large and small kiwis in the same tray. The packaging must be adjustable and still fit exactly. This machine can do that, and that's something very special.\"<\/p>

The Greenery is currently developing a filling machine that automatically places the kiwis in the trays. According to van Stee, placing oval kiwis neatly into a tray at high speed is a challenge. To achieve this, the company is talking to various machine suppliers.<\/p>

\"The technology has just been finalised. They have now started building the tray filler. Ultimately, the plan is to commission the fully automated, sustainable packaging line at the RDC in Barendrecht before the start of the New Zealand SunGold season (week 17).\"<\/p>
