Aluminium Germany is critical of the European Commission's forthcoming decision to further suspend anti-dumping duties on rolled products from China. The association believes that locations in Europe are jeopardised by distorted supply conditions.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The German and European aluminium industry is looking with concern at the forthcoming decision by the European Commission as to whether the protective tariffs on aluminium rolled products from China will remain suspended.<\/p>

\u201eThe European Commission introduced the anti-dumping duties because it did not overlook the fact that Chinese companies were able to offer their products on the European market on very unequal competitive terms. This jeopardises the existence of European locations. Nothing has changed to this day. In addition, these imports are at odds with German and European climate protection goals, as aluminium produced in China has a carbon footprint three times higher than aluminium from Europe.\u201c<\/p>

With a production volume of two million tonnes, Germany is by far the largest production site for aluminium rolled products in Europe<\/strong> and covers around a third of European demand. At one and a half million tonnes, Germany is also the largest European market for rolled products, with corresponding upstream and downstream stages of the value chain. Aluminium is at the beginning of various industrial supply chains<\/strong>, which are particularly important for the German economy.<\/p>

The European Commission's announcement that it would suspend the safeguard measures has already led to a massive increase in imports from China<\/strong> led. Imports have already reached new highs in spring 2022.<\/p>

\u201eThe aluminium industry is not afraid of competition, on the contrary. Our companies are globally successful thanks to their high level of innovation, the highest quality standards, their commitment to climate protection and long-term, partnership-based cooperation with customer industries. But massively distorted supply conditions such as those in China are leading us further and further away from our trading partners\u201e aspirations of a level playing field in terms of trade policy.\u201c<\/p>

\u201eAluminium is a strategic material for the decarbonisation of the continent. In recent months, both the German government and the European Commission have emphasised the need for European industries to be independent of just a few, very dominant trading partners. Continuing to suspend the urgently needed protective tariffs is diametrically opposed to this.\u201c<\/p>

The decades-long Partnerships between the aluminium industry and customer industries in Europe<\/strong> are a success factor in achieving climate neutrality. This is because closed-loop cycles already exist in the production of rolled aluminium. Against this backdrop, Aluminium Germany is warning against a further suspension of anti-dumping duties on rolled products from China.<\/p>
