The recycling of steel packaging in Europe has increased for the tenth time in a row. 85.5 per cent of packaging is now recycled, 1.5 per cent more than in the previous year. The figures come from APEAL, the Association of European Packaging Steel Manufacturers, and represent a further step towards a circular economy.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201eThe excellent recycling rate, which continues to improve every year for steel packaging, is proof of the high environmental compatibility of steel and the work of the players in the entire value chain to improve recycling processes, infrastructure and consumer communication.\u201c<\/p>

More countries than ever before have recycled more than 90 per cent of steel packaging. This is a clear signal that the Closing the loop for steel packaging within reach<\/strong>.<\/p>

\u201eHowever, more needs to be done. APEAL's vision of zero landfill of steel packaging by 2025 remains unchanged, and there are still a number of countries that have a long way to go to reach the average recycling rate for steel packaging in Europe. In fact, diverting recyclable packaging from landfill is one of the six key policy recommendations in the APEAL Recycling Report 2022, which was published earlier this year.\u201c<\/p>

The report follows the adoption of the new EU method for calculating recycling rates, which ensures that only the quantities accepted at the input of the recycling processes are used to calculate the quantities recycled.<\/strong> and not the quantities collected or sorted. The methodology and data sources used by APEAL to calculate the current recycling rate have been independently reviewed, audited and certified by Eunomia, a consultancy specialising in energy and waste.<\/p>

Steel is circular by nature. Due to its magnetic properties, steel can be easily collected from all waste streams and, as a durable material, it can be recycled again and again without any loss of quality. Furthermore 100 per cent of the recycled steel in the more than 500 recycling plants throughout Europe for new steel products<\/strong> - a bridge, a wind turbine or even new packaging.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201eA number of Member States have already submitted their recycling figures according to the new EU method for calculating recycling rates, which creates a level playing field not only for Member States but also for packaging materials, as only actual recycling is reported. The new method is binding for data from 2020 onwards and must be reported by June 2022 at the latest. However, several Member States will only be able to apply these new rules from next year. The data for 2020 is therefore considered a transition year, but we are confident that steel will continue to lead the way in recycling rates for packaging materials across Europe.\u201c<\/p>
