In future, Syntegon will offer the pharmaceutical and food industries a software-based approach certified by T\u00dcV Rheinland that provides information on CO2<\/sub>-footprint of the machines. The calculation covers the parameters electricity, compressed air, media and packaging materials.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The flexible methodology can be used to analyse both packaging and process systems. This sets the parameters in relation to the CO2<\/sub>-emissions<\/strong>to determine consumption in a holistic and customised manner.<\/p>

\"Our analysis covers the life cycle of the machines, from their manufacture to transport and utilisation. The latter accounts for around two thirds of the entire life cycle of the systems. With the data collected in this way, we effectively support customers in improving systems and processes in terms of sustainable production and reducing costs.\"<\/p>

The methodology developed Syntegon<\/a> 2021 also with a view to its own sustainability goals: By 2025, the company wants to Reduce consumption of particularly energy-intensive systems by 25 per cent<\/strong> - and are therefore below the consumption levels customary in the industry for around 80 per cent of the systems in our own portfolio. Consumption plays a central role over the entire life cycle of an installation: More than two thirds of the CO2<\/sub>-footprint is generated in the utilisation phase<\/strong>. The newly developed calculation is therefore an integral part of the so-called Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), i.e. an evaluation of machine data over their life cycle.<\/p>

In 2021, the company initiated a corresponding LCA project in order to CO2<\/sub>-emissions from its machines and reduce them in the long term<\/strong>. According to Braeuninger, the demand for such calculations is particularly high among pharmaceutical customers. In order to optimise the methodology for CO2<\/sub>-Syntegon is also represented in a corresponding working group of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA).<\/p>

Syntegon tested an initial model of its consumption analysis in autumn 2021 with the Elematic 3001 case packer and the GKF 720 capsule filling machine. The company then presented the results of the test phase for the first time at Expo Lounges 2022 in Karlsruhe. In the Certification by T\u00dcV Rheinland took place on 1 July 2022<\/strong>Data aggregation and preparation are thus carried out in accordance with common international standards such as ISO 14067 and enable the calculation model to be used beyond the test facilities.<\/p>

\"Our approach allows us to analyse all systems from our portfolio as well as various production scenarios on request - and thus gain further insights into CO2<\/sub>-values.\"<\/p>

For data collection and analysis, the company relies on tested software from the Institute for Environmental Informatics (ifu) in Hamburg and a comprehensive database from the Zurich-based non-profit organisation ecoinvent<\/strong>. Following a successful pilot phase and certification, the life cycle assessment is still in its infancy. In the coming months and years, the company would like to expand its service portfolio accordingly: A Solution for determining consumption and CO2<\/sub>-values<\/strong>which provides customers with useful information on reducing emissions and helps with CO2<\/sub>-reporting is supported.<\/p>

The internal utilisation of the data obtained in this way is also to be given greater weight in the long term, for example in the New or further development of machines for the pharmaceutical and food industries<\/strong>. Syntegon considers direct collaboration with its customers to be crucial: \"We have to apply the calculation models in the context of specific projects. This is the only way they can be customised - to the benefit of both parties,\" concludes Carbon.<\/p>
