Packaging specialist Herma has developed a pressure-sensitive adhesive optimised for the recycling process of logistics cartons. The company is thus realising the findings of a study by the University of Graz, according to which such packaging can be recycled far more frequently than previously assumed under the right circumstances.<\/strong><\/p>

Provided the recycling processes are right, logistics cartons and folding boxes can be not just four to seven times, as previously assumed, but up to 25 times.<\/strong>. This was the result of a study at the University of Graz in 2021. In order to optimise the recycling of cardboard and paper, Herma has therefore developed a new range of pressure-sensitive adhesives and corresponding adhesive composites. According to the company, these are characterised by the fact that logistics and other labels produced from them cause virtually no adhesive contamination in the recycling process.<\/strong><\/p>

The company has now received certification from the Papiertechnische Stiftung (PTS) for five adhesive laminates, i.e. for labelling materials including pressure-sensitive adhesives. The only condition that such a laminate must fulfil according to the PTS certificates: It must not make up more than 25 per cent of the mass of the cardboard packaging.<\/strong><\/p>

\u201eHowever, given the low weight of a label compared to the cardboard used, this condition is probably always fulfilled,\u201c says Dr Stefan Kissling, Head of Development Adhesives and Special Coatings at Herma Haftmaterial. \u201eIt was important for us to have not only the pressure-sensitive adhesives certified, but also the complete laminates. Because this corresponds to the application in practice<\/strong>.\"<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Versatile application options<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The new 72Bpt adhesive is used in combination with two lightly coated paper materials, Hermawei\u00df super (grade 240) and Hermaextracoat (grade 242). Both compounds are characterised by their good initial adhesion and are therefore suitable for carton labelling.<\/strong> For laser sheet applications, the company has developed a combination of the new 72Apc adhesive and Hermalaser sheet (grade 135).<\/p>

In the field of thermal labels, the company offers a PTS-certified option for optimised cardboard and paper recycling: an adhesive composite consisting of the new 72Eps pressure-sensitive adhesive and Hermatherm nature (grade 900), the first Thermal label adhesive without chemical developer<\/strong>. The fifth PTS-certified association is a very special one. universally applicable adhesive material<\/strong>, which consists of the new, single-layer adhesive 72C and the label material Herma white (grade 601).<\/p>
