A collaboration between Sabic and Scientex has resulted in the world's first flexible food packaging that uses recycled Ocean Bound Plastic (OBP) as the basis. The company uses certified circular polypropylene from Sabic.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The material is used for the packaging of a premium pasta brand sold in Malaysia.<\/p>

OBP is discarded plastic waste that is found in areas up to 50 kilometres inland from waterways and can eventually be washed out to sea by rainfall, rivers or tides.<\/p>

\u201eThanks to this highly efficient collaboration with SABIC, we are able to bring the world's first flexible PP food packaging made from recycled OBP to the Asian market. This successful initiative shows that it is possible to tackle the problem of plastic waste through targeted collaboration in the value chain and sets a milestone in shaping a circular economy for plastics in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia.\u201c<\/p>

The material used in the project OBP is recovered and converted into pyrolysis oil in an advanced recycling process<\/strong>. Sabic uses this oil as an alternative raw material for the production of certified, circular PP polymer for further processing into BOPP film. Scientex then uses this film to produce and print the pasta packaging. The entire chain, from the management of the collected OBP to the final packaging, is seamlessly integrated under one roof. accredited by established certification systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

With an OBP content of 30 per cent that can be offset against the mass balance, the certified, recyclable PP has the same properties as conventional PP based on fossil raw materials<\/strong> and could be used as a direct drop-in alternative for this flexible food packaging application without the need to change existing equipment and processes.<\/p>

Sabic's certified circular polymers are part of the company's TRUCIRCLE portfolio and services for circular solutions. The range also includes Recycling-friendly design, mechanically recycled products, certified renewable polymers made from bio-based raw materials and closed-loop initiatives<\/strong>, to recycle plastics for high-quality applications and prevent valuable used plastics from becoming waste.<\/p>
