The bacterium could be part of the solution for dealing with plastic in the world's oceans.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0ab3bc exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e0ab3bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Based on a model study with plastic in artificial seawater in the laboratory, doctoral student Maaike Goudriaan calculated that bacteria can cause about <strong>one per cent of the plastic supplied per year in CO<sub>2<\/sub> and other harmless substances<\/strong>. \u201eBut,\u201c emphasises Goudriaan, \u201ethat is certainly <strong>No solution to the problem of plastic soup in our oceans<\/strong>. But it's another part of the answer to the question of where all the \u201amissing plastic\u2018 in the oceans has gone.\u201c<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-58db69a exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"58db69a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Goudriaan had a special plastic containing a specific form of carbon (13C) produced especially for these experiments. It was already known that the bacterium Rhodococcus ruber can form a so-called biofilm on plastic in nature. It was also possible to measure that <strong>Plastic disappears under this biofilm<\/strong>. \u201eBut now we have really shown that the bacteria actually digest the plastic.\u201c<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-db79ee0 exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"db79ee0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When Goudriaan analyses the entire degradation of plastic in CO<sub>2<\/sub> she estimates that the bacteria can break down around one per cent of the available plastic per year.<\/p><div id=\"packa-4281017312\" class=\"packa-inhalt packa-entity-placement\"><!--noptimize--><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-2686439340972671\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;text-align:center\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2686439340972671\" data-ad-slot=\"6171251825\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><!--\/noptimize--><\/div><blockquote><p>\u201eThis is probably an underestimate. We have only analysed the amount of carbon-13 in CO<sub>2<\/sub> so not in the other degradation products of the plastic. There is certainly 13C in various other molecules, but it is difficult to say which part of it was degraded by the UV light and which part was digested by the bacteria.\u201c<\/p><p><strong>Maaike Goudriaan<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1630976 exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1630976\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Even though marine microbiologist Goudriaan is enthusiastic about the plastic-eating bacteria, she emphasises that <strong>Microbial digestion is not a solution to the huge problem of all that plastic<\/strong> that floats on and in our oceans.<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201eThese experiments are above all a proof of principle. I see them as one piece of the puzzle in the question of where all the plastic that disappears into the oceans ends up. If you try to trace all our waste, a lot of plastic is lost. Digestion by bacteria could possibly provide part of the explanation.\u201c<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Further research is needed to find out whether \u201ewild\u201c bacteria also eat plastic \u201ein the wild\u201c. Goudriaan has already done some <strong>Pilot experiments with real seawater and some sediments<\/strong> collected from the bottom of the Wadden Sea.<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201eThe initial results of these experiments indicate that plastic is also degraded in nature. A new PhD student will have to continue this work. Ultimately, of course, the hope is to calculate how much plastic in the oceans is actually broken down by bacteria. But prevention is much better than cleaning up.
