Gernep currently installs a three-digit number of Herma labellers in its rotary labellers every year.<\/strong> Three Herma labellers are used in a new solution for the Sterzing dairy farm, which can also be seen at Interpack. <\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Founded almost 40 years ago and initially specialising in medium-sized breweries, today Gernep's rotary kilns are regarded as modular specialists for high-quality equipment in the beverage, food, consumer healthcare and non-food industries. A special design was developed to meet the specific requirements of Gernep<\/strong>, first as the Herma 400 Rotary, then as the Herma 500 Rotary. With its practically tapered shape, reminiscent of a slice of cake, it is ideal for use in rotary machines.<\/p>

\u201eThe closer we get to the centre of the carousel, the slimmer the design has to be,\u201c explains Stefan Kramer, Product and Project Manager at Gernep. Because more and more control systems have to be integrated in the centre of a carousel<\/strong>, for example, for the presence of labels or for the correct printing of variable data. \u201eIn the past, it was primarily pharmaceutical companies that had this requirement. Today, it's even the case for smaller breweries.\u201c<\/p>

Clearly defined standards and interfaces such as OPC\/UA facilitate the integration of labellers. Fully integrated into the Gernep machine control system, the labellers can be conveniently set remotely<\/strong>, to support end customers, for example.<\/p>

Gernep currently uses three different versions of the Herma 500 Rotary, depending on the customer's performance requirements: A small version is used up to 45 metres per minute<\/strong>, which does not require a motorised winder. The next most powerful version achieves up to 75 metres per minute with motorised support from the winders. The most powerful version achieves 150 metres per minute. All versions are available with one or two unwinders. The latter enables the operator to switch to the next label roll more quickly.<\/p>

If machine downtimes due to reel changes are to be almost completely avoided, Gernep machines can be prepared for non-stop operation. For this purpose, all or defined labellers receive a corresponding counterpart<\/strong>, which takes over labelling as soon as a label roll is empty.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

This is the case, for example, with a self-adhesive labeller from the Soluta series, which Gernep has just completed for the Sterzing dairy farm and which is equipped with three Herma 500 Rotary machines. It can be experienced at interpack at Gernep. This system labels up to 10,000 jars per hour, each containing 150 grams of high-quality organic yoghurt<\/strong>. The labelling process is demanding. Not only does a circular label have to be precisely dispensed onto the plastic lid from above, but its two narrow sealing tabs also have to be attached to the glass body cleanly and without creases. As the plastic lid already has a tear tab, this must not be covered. This is achieved by mechanically aligning the yoghurt jars in an upstream rotary star wheel.<\/p>

Once the lid label has been applied, the jars are rotated and run past one of the two additional Herma 500 Rotary labellers to label the body of the jar. An operator can simply move the non-active labeller out of the carousel on a carriage and apply a new label roll at his leisure. This also contributes to precision: The speed is synchronised automatically<\/strong>; Height and tilt adjustment is simple and precise using a trapezoidal threaded spindle and digital position indicators.\u00a0<\/p>

Because for the Sterzing dairy farm it is already the second plant of this kind<\/strong>, which Gernep supplies. And in 2014, labelling technology from Herma<\/a> on board. \u00a0<\/p>
