Vegan and vegetarian substitute products are particularly characterised by a sense of sustainability and environmental awareness. The same is also expected of the packaging, which should be characterised by a high level of recyclability, for example. This was also Gutfried GmbH's aim when launching its vegan smoked salmon alternative. The development of the product was accompanied by intensive development of the packaging - the polypropylene-based high-performance film from S\u00fcdpack's Pure-Line was the perfect solution.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Healthy and above all sustainable enjoyment right down to the last slice? \u201eIt's possible,\u201c confirms Matthias Gaida, CMO at Gutfried<\/a>. The experts spent a year working on the ingredients, consistency, colour and, above all, the taste of the plant-based smoked salmon substitute. It didn't take quite as long for the experts from film manufacturer South pack<\/a> We were able to present a packaging concept whose recyclability meets Gutfried's sustainability requirements. A concept that protects the sensitive product and presents it attractively. The Reclosure system also helps to extend product shelf life<\/strong> and thus to the avoidance of food waste.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The feedback from consumers and the first supermarkets sounds promising. \u201eNot a matter of course,\u201c says Matthias Gaida. \u201eBecause developing a vegan fish substitute is challenging. But we have been researching alternative products for a long time and therefore have Sound knowledge and project experience<\/strong>.\"<\/p>

But what does the product, which looks almost like real salmon, not least because of its colouring, consist of? \u201eEssentially starch, rapeseed oil and rice,\u201c is the answer. Production takes place according to high quality and hygiene standards at the veggie factory in B\u00f6klund. The vegan Most of the ingredients come from European suppliers<\/strong>. Like the original, the vegan version gets its spicy smoky flavour from smoking over beech wood.<\/p>

Gutfried focusses on sustainability when purchasing basic products and selecting its suppliers. The packaging also follows the trend towards greater environmental awareness. \u201eThanks to a constant dialogue in a spirit of partnership, the question of circular and therefore sustainable packaging is one of the most important topics in all our discussions with customers today<\/strong>. We have already realised numerous projects at Gutfried,\u201c explains Benjamin Sense, Key Account Manager at S\u00fcdpack. Matthias Gaida adds: \u201eWe will also develop further concepts together. To launch our range of Gutfried V products, i.e. the vegan and vegetarian alternatives, we want to Switch completely to recyclable packaging<\/strong>. The next step is to replace the poultry sausage packs with an overall concept that is both recyclable and particularly resource-efficient.\u201c<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

S\u00fcdpack delivers sustainable packaging concept<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

With the HowSmokerLAXXvegan<\/em>-pack is a MAP packaging (modified atmosphere packaging) with reclosure<\/strong>, whose films come from the film manufacturer's Pure-Line. The material structures of this product family are based either on PE (polyethylene) or, as in the case of Gutfried, on PP - and are therefore also available in a variety of colours. Classified as recyclable as an overall concept in many countries<\/strong>. In this specific case, the recyclability of the packaging was certified at 94 per cent - an aspect that also plays a central role in brand communication.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Strong performance and functionality<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The packaging concept provides a high level of product protection for a longer shelf life of the packaged food. This is ensured by the coordination of the Bottom and top films, sealing performance and integrated high barrier against oxygen<\/strong>. For consumers, the packaging is characterised by a high level of convenience. Thanks to the resealable properties, the packs are easy to open and reseal. This means that the HowSmokerLAXXvegan<\/em> appetisingly fresh and does not have to be thrown away prematurely. \u201eFull enjoyment right down to the last slice,\u201c confirms Matthias Gaida.<\/p>

The technical aspects of the Pure-Line films, because they can be easily processed on standard packaging machines<\/strong>. While the Ecoterm rigid film with a thickness of 250 \u00b5m has good thermoforming properties, the Multipeel PurePP top film scores points for its low consumption of resources thanks to its thickness of 80 \u00b5m.<\/p>

In terms of colour, the print layout of the packaging for the vegan salmon substitute with its fresh green and light blue stripes differs from the usual colour scheme of the packaging for products made from real salmon. The bright yellow vegan emblem and the recyclability claim are prominently placed and instantly recognisable.<\/p>

The co-operation project between the two companies took around six months from the initial idea to the development of the first product and its market launch. With the Pure-Line, it was possible to product family that are already established on the market and whose material compatibility has been tested on standard packaging machines.<\/strong> is. \u201eThe technical implementation was more of a marginal aspect. Rather, the real challenge was to optimise the features and functionalities of the Films perfectly adapted to the special requirements of the food industry<\/strong> and to the individual wishes of the customer in terms of product protection, design and convenience for the consumer,\u201c summarises Holger Hoss, Head of Strategic Product Management at S\u00fcdpack.<\/p>
