Capacity for recycling 150,000 tonnes of liquefied plastic waste per year is to be created in Porvoo, Finland. Neste has now made a final investment decision for the construction of the plant.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Upgrading is one of the three processing steps used to convert liquefied plastic waste into a high-quality raw material for new plastics: Pre-treatment, valorisation and refining. The investment is part of a larger project (PULSE), which will receive 135 million euros in funding from the EU Innovation Fund when fully implemented and is aiming for a total capacity of 400,000 tonnes per year.\u00a0<\/p>

The pre-treatment and valorisation of liquefied plastic waste plays an important role in Nestes<\/a> Concept for chemical recycling<\/strong>. This increases the company's flexibility with regard to the processed waste, i.e. Neste is also able to, Processing plastic waste of inferior quality<\/strong>. This will enable the company to expand the processing of liquefied plastic waste into a high-quality raw material for the petrochemical industry at its existing refinery in Porvoo.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201eWe have expanded our ability to process recyclable raw materials at the refinery in Porvoo in recent years and will now build a corresponding plant. The new plant, which will process 150,000 tonnes of liquefied plastic waste, is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2025.\u201c<\/p>

As part of the project, Neste will build new facilities at the Porvoo refinery, but will also utilise existing facilities by retrofitting them in order to expand chemical recycling efficiently and quickly. The upgraded liquefied plastic waste will then be co-processed in the conventional refinery, replacing part of the fossil resources processed in the Porvoo refinery. The necessary preparatory work at the Porvoo refinery was successfully completed in the first half of 2023, meaning that construction work can begin without delay.\u00a0<\/p>
