During a visit by Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke and Rhineland-Palatinate Environment Minister Katrin Eder to the Werner & Mertz headquarters in Mainz, owner Reinhard Schneider spoke in favour of promoting the mechanical recycling of plastic packaging and converting the EU recycling tax into a tax on virgin material.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Politics meets SMEs: Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke and Rhineland-Palatinate Environment Minister Katrin Eder visited the Werner & Mertz headquarters in Mainz on Tuesday. Reinhard Schneider, owner of the company for ecological detergents and cleaning agents, presented the current status of the Recyclate Initiative. Schneider launched the initiative in 2012, in which Cooperation partners along the value chain for the high-quality mechanical recycling of used plastic from household collections<\/strong> such as the Yellow Bag.<\/p>

More than 740 million bottles made from 100 per cent post-consumer recyclate have been produced and filled in Mainz to date, including Frosch brand products. The latest successes are the new trigger caps of the cleaning agents, in which the mechanical components are made of recyclate.<\/strong> The mono-material refill bag also makes an important contribution to packaging avoidance and high-quality mechanical recycling.<\/p>

In the exchange with the ministers, Reinhard Schneider emphasised how important it was to continue along the same path and to promote the high-quality mechanical recycling of plastic packaging.<\/strong> Plans to equate chemical recycling with mechanical recycling pose a threat to packaging recyclers. In addition, the favourable price of virgin plastic is preventing a real change.<\/p>

\u201eFor a level playing field, the use of climate-damaging virgin plastic must become more expensive. This can be achieved by converting the EU recycling levy into a tax on virgin plastic and by cancelling the subsidy for the production of virgin plastic.\u201c<\/p>

\u201eStrengthening the circular economy is essential from both an environmental and climate protection perspective. In order to make progress in this area, the tax levied on non-recycled packaging waste and paid to Brussels should be further developed so that it has a steering effect on manufacturers so that they establish reusable solutions, produce recyclable packaging and increasingly use recycled plastics for the production of new packaging. Werner & Mertz is a pioneer in this area, which is why we also discussed approaches to the sustainable design of the plastic levy with the company.\u201c<\/p>
