The Berlin district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is in favour of introducing a packaging tax on disposable packaging. It is intended to help reduce the amount of waste and save costs.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The introduction of such a tax is to be presented to the Council of Mayors today (Thursday 20 July 2023). The reports the rbb<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to the district office, around 42,000 plastic and paper cups are thrown away every day in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg alone. Lined up end to end, this amount of rubbish would fill the stretch from Frankfurter Allee S-Bahn station to Alexanderplatz. The district has had to spend more and more money on cleaning the parks for years.<\/p>

According to the district office, there is nothing legally standing in the way of its introduction, citing a decision by the Federal Administrative Court, which recently confirmed the legality of the municipal packaging tax in T\u00fcbingen. As a result, several cities had announced that they were considering the introduction of such a tax. These include M\u00f6nchengladbach, Dortmund, D\u00fcsseldorf and Freiburg as well as Gummersbach and Constance.<\/p>\n
